Zhejiang Province is located in the south of the Yangtze Delta on the southeast coast of China, close to

Shanghai, with the land area of 108,000 square kilometers and the population of 50.60 million. It has been renowned as “the land of fish and rice, the home of silk and tea, the state of cultural relics and the place of interests”. Zhejiang is one of provinces with the strongest comprehensive economic strength in China. In 2008, the provincial GDP is 2148.69 billion RMB, up by 10.1% over the previous year, while GDP per capita is 42214 RMB (equivalent to 6078 USD as per the average annual exchange rate of RMB to USD), up by 8.6%.

 

Over the past 30 years since reform and opening up, the open economy of Zhejiang develops fast so that the omni-directional, multi-level, and wide-ranging economic development pattern has been already formed. At present, Zhejiang has established the direct economic and trade relations with over 200 countries and areas in the world. In 2008, the provincial import & export value is 211.15 billion USD, up by 19.4% over the previous year, among which import value 56.86 billion USD, up by 17.0%, export value 154.29 billion USD, up by 20.3%.  There have been 1858 newly-established enterprises with foreign investment with contractual foreign investment 17.82 billion USD and actual foreign investment 10.07 billion USD. Total overseas investment reaches 920 million USD while the investment from Chinese party reaches 860 million USD. The turnover from overseas contracted projects, overseas labor service cooperation and overseas design and consultation reaches 2.09 billion USD. Total retail sales of consumer goods reaches  744.17 billion RMB, up by 19.8% over the previous year. Urban market and rural market are developing in the same pace basically. The retail sales of urban market and rural market are increased by 20.2% and 18.8% respectively.
